Certificate Curriculum

NURS 6500 — Neuropathophysiology & Psychopharmacology for Advanced Nursing (3 credits)
Study brain pathology, neuroscience basics, and PK/PD across the lifespan. Apply psychotropic medication principles to manage targeted psychiatric symptoms.

NURS 6510 — Psychiatric Mental Health Theory I (3 credits)
Use DSM-5 to guide assessment, diagnosis, and care plans across the lifespan. Emphasize evidence-based, non-pharmacologic interventions for common mental health disorders.

NURS 6515 — Psychiatric Mental Health Theory II (3 credits)
Build skills in psychotherapy with a focus on cognitive approaches and proven therapy techniques. Manage prevalent psychiatric conditions using current clinical guidelines.

NURS 6520 — Psychiatric Mental Health Theory III (3 credits)
Strengthen PMHNP role competencies. Refine assessment, diagnostic reasoning, and evidence-based treatment planning.

NURS 7510 — Psychiatric Mental Health Practicum I (2 credits)
Begin supervised clinical practice. Develop advanced assessment and initial management skills for patients with psychiatric disorders.

NURS 7515 — Psychiatric Mental Health Practicum II (2 credits)
Advance supervised practice. Diagnose and treat patients with complex psychiatric presentations.

NURS 7520 — Psychiatric Mental Health Practicum III
Complete the practicum sequence under supervision. Demonstrate progressive competence in diagnosing and treating patients and families with complex needs.

Certificate Clinicals

Students complete 500 supervised clinical hours across three practicums. Placements are local; students secure sites with support from a Clinical Contract Coordinator. Extra hours may be required to reach competence.

Certificate Admissions

  • Current certification as an advanced nurse practitioner with prescriptive authority
  • MSN or DNP from an accredited school; minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Unencumbered RN license and current CPR
