Certificate Prerequisites & Admissions
Application Requirements:
- MSN, DNP, or terminal nursing degree from regionally accredited institution
- Current certification as Family, Primary Care, or Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner
- Minimum 3.0 GPA on last 60 academic hours
- Unencumbered RN license in practice state
- Three professional references (supervisor, academic, clinical mentor)
- Personal statement (max 2 pages, APA formatted)
- Current CV/resume with detailed employment history
- Clear background check and drug screen
- Current BLS certification and health insurance
- Graduate-level coursework in advanced assessment, pathophysiology, and pharmacology
PMHNP Certificate Curriculum
Required courses include the following:
NU 641 – Psychopharmacology
Expands on advanced pharmacology to address the physiological and behavioral effects of psychoactive drugs. Covers neuroscience, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, therapeutic uses, mechanisms, side effects, contraindications, monitoring, dosing, and interactions across the lifespan.
NU 642 – Psychopathology
Builds on advanced pathophysiology to examine the neuroscience and psychopathology of mental health disorders. Includes neuroanatomy, neurobiology, and genomics as a foundation for clinical management across the lifespan.
NU 539 – Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing I
Introduces assessment, diagnosis, and management of psychiatric disorders across the lifespan using DSM-5 guidelines. Emphasizes both pharmacological and non-pharmacological management, with integration of technology and virtual care, and includes at least 65 direct care clinical hours.
NU 643 – Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing II
Advances diagnostic reasoning and application of evidence-based guidelines for mental health disorder management. Continues emphasis on DSM-5 use, refining assessment skills, and integrating pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions.
NU 644 – Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing II Clinical
Provides 260 clinical hours to apply advanced theories, refine assessment and diagnostic skills, and implement evidence-based interventions for individuals, families, and groups. Includes exposure to diverse PMHNP roles and models.
NU 645 – Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing III
Further develops assessment and management skills while addressing system-level issues affecting psychiatric care. Explores family dynamics, ethics, legal considerations, finances, and social determinants of health in PMHNP practice.
NU 646 – Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing III Clinical
Offers 260 clinical hours to expand advanced practice skills, apply theoretical concepts, and deliver evidence-based psychiatric care. Includes exploration of PMHNP roles in varied models of practice.
NU 647 – Role Synthesis and Faith Integration
Prepares students for PMHNP certification by reviewing core competencies and synthesizing the advanced practice role. Emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, holistic treatment, and integration of faith in mental health care.

Clinical Requirements
Students complete 585 supervised clinical hours across three semesters with a 65:1 clinical hour to credit hour ratio. Clinical experiences include 65 hours in the first semester, followed by 260 hours each in spring and summer semesters. All clinical rotations occur at approved sites partnered with the University of Mobile, allowing students to complete requirements in their local communities.
Program Duration
The 24-credit program spans three consecutive semesters with focused psychiatric mental health coursework.
Fall semester includes psychopharmacology, psychopathology, and Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing I totaling 8 credits.
Spring semester covers Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing II with intensive clinical components for 7 credits. Summer semester concludes with Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing III, role synthesis, and faith integration for 9 credits.
Program Costs
Tuition is $715 per credit hour, totaling $17,160 for the 24-credit program. Additional fees include comprehensive fees of $545 per semester for fall and spring, and nursing clinical course fees of $500 for courses NU 539, 644, and 646.

Accreditation & Outcomes
Graduates are eligible to sit for national PMHNP certification exams and apply for APRN licensure. The program prepares practitioners to function as independent mental health providers capable of comprehensive psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and treatment across all age groups.

All didactic components are delivered virtually through asynchronous online courses, providing maximum flexibility for working nurse practitioners.
